Fiji wins silver, ends campaign unbeaten

The Fiji men’s football team ended its campaign in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games with a silver medal after finishing second behind host Vanuatu.

The Christophe Gamel coached side defeated New Caledonia 4-1 in its last match on Friday to end  the competition unbeaten with 11 points from 5 matches.

Saula Waqa grabbed a double in the match while Antonio Tuivuna and Rusiate Matarerega scored a goal each.

Waqa also finished as Fiji’s top scorer at the Games having scored a total of 7 goals while fellow marksman Christopher Wasasala netted 5 goals.

Vanuatu won the gold medal after beating Solomon Islands 3-2 and ending with 13 points.

Fiji walloped Tuvalu 8-0, was held 0-0 and 1-1 by Solomon Islands and Vanuatu before beating Tonga 4-0 and New Caledonia 4-1.
