Fiji women footballers settle for silver

The Fijian women’s football team finished second in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games after going down 2-1 to host Vanuatu in Port Villa last night.

Two handling errors by Fijian goalkeeper Merevasi Fuga allowed the hosts to win their first ever gold medal in the sport of football in the Games.

The first half proved to be a tightly contested affair and the teams went to the break with a goal-less draw.

Replacement Laisale Solomon scored the opening goal of the match in the 62nd minute for the hosts.

Fiji managed to level scores through Cema Nasau in the 85th minute but the blunder in goal saw Vanuatu snatch the winner a minute later through Junane Ishmael.

Prior to their loss in the Gold medal playoff, the Marika Rodu coached side was unbeaten in the competition.
