Fiji bundled out of Sydney 7s quarters

Fiji’s hopes of winning the 2018 Sydney 7s ended this afternoon as the Gareth Baber coached side was outclassed 24-7 by USA in the first cup quarterfinal at the Allianz Stadium.

USA was more composed and determined from the start and took an early lead through a Folau Niua try in the second minute.

First half replacement Eroni Sau managed to level scores for Fiji after breaking two tackles and racing to the try-line. Amenoni Nasilasila converted to give them a 7-5 lead.

Sloppy defending resulted in Martin Iosefo going between the posts to score USA’s second try and give them a 12-7 halftime lead.

The second half completely belonged to the Americans as they ran in two more tries through Maka Unufe and Perry Baker while the Fijians despite having some good chances failed to connect their passes and made so many handling errors and missed tackles.

Fiji will now play Kenya in the first fifth place semifinal at 5.52pm. The Kenyans were beaten 17-0 by defending champions South Africa in their quarterfinal clash.

In the other quarters, host Australia proved too strong for New Zealand and registered a 24-12 win while Argentina recorded a 10-0 upset win over England.
