Fiji loses to Kenya, faces NZ in quarters

Fiji lost its final Pool A match of the Las Vegas 7s 17-14 to Kenya at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Nevada today and will face New Zealand in the Cup quarterfinal .

The match was full of errors as both teams toiled hard to secure a win.

Towering forward Paula Dranisinukula scored first for Fiji before veteran Collins Injera leveled scores for the Kenyans as the teams went to the break 7-7 level.

Willie Ambaka scored Kenya's second try and put them ahead 12-7 early in the second half.

Replacement Alosio Naduva sprinted away to score Fiji's second try just a minute before fulltime. And a successful conversion put the Fijians up 14-12.

A late surge by the Kenyans saw Andrew Amonde diving in the corner to seal victory and a place for his side in the Cup quarters.

Fiji topped the pool and will meet arch rivals New Zealand in the first Cup quarterfinal at 1.26pm (Fiji Time).

In other quarterfinals, host nation USA will play England at 1.49pm, Argentina faces Kenya at 2.10pm while defending champion South Africa will battle it out against Australia at 2.10pm.

The semifinals and final will be played tomorrow.
