Fiji Warriors snatch late win over Samoa

Defending champions, the Fiji Warriors scored two late tries to beat arch rivals Samoa A 33-21 in their opening match of the 2018 World Rugby Pacific Challenge at the ANZ Stadium in Suva today.

The Senirusi Seruvakula coached side started the match well and scored three tries through fullback Inia Tawalo, and centres Waisale Urabuta and Apisalome Vota to lead 21-9 at halftime.

Samoa’s points came from the boots of fly-half D’Angelo  Leiuila.

The Samoans entered the second spell more focused and determined and scored two tries through prop Howard Sililoto and halfback Melani Matavao to tie up the scores at 21-21 and make the last few minutes of the match a thriller.

The hosts applied continuous pressure and despite having a man short after Tawalo was sin-binned for a late tackle, they managed to get their fourth try after winger Veramu Dikidikilati dived in the corner and touched down.

A successful conversion by Seru Vularika put Fiji up by 26-21 and Captain Mosese Voka sealed the win with a brilliant finish as he shrugged off two tacklers on his way to the try-line.

Fiji Warriors will meet Japan in their next match at 5pm  on Tuesday while Samoa A will face Tonga A at 2.30pm.
