Goalie Ratu avoids lengthy ban

Ba goalkeeper Josaia Ratu will return to full action after missing two matches in the Vodafone Premier League.

Ratu was indefinitely suspended from all levels of football by Fiji FA after there were allegations of man-handling of a match official by him following Ba’s 2-1 loss to Labasa at Subrail Park earlier this month.

However at the Disciplinary Committee hearing at the Fiji FA Headquarters in Suva in the weekend, it could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt that Ratu committed the alleged offence.

Speaking to FijiLive, Fiji FA Chief Executive Mohammed Yusuf said Ba presented its case very well with video evidence and after deliberations, the Committee ruled that Ratu be suspended according to Vodafone Premier League rules only.

“We cannot suspend or take any further action on him as Ba defended its case with evidence.  Therefore no additional charged will be laid and he will just miss two matches and will pay fine for copping a red card in that match.”

“The Committee also took into consideration a mitigation factor from Ba FA where they stated that the incident had seen Ratu getting dropped from the national squad and missing out on the tour of the Philippines. The goalkeeper admitted to unsporting behavior and using abusive language, however it could not be proven that he man-handled a match official, therefore normal VPL rules will apply in this case,” said Yusuf.
