7s reps get $7500 each from Government

The 13 members of the Fiji 7s team that won silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast last month have been given $7500 each by the Fijian Government.

Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou handed over the payment cheque to the players at a special function in Suva yesterday.

He commended the team for their performance at the recent HSBC tournament in Singapore and said the medal incentive is a source of encouragement to the athletes and also provides an opportunity for the nation to recognise the achievements of Fijians on the world stage.

“Government has approved that payment for those that won Gold, Silver and bronze medals respectively, at the Commonwealth Games 2018 to be sourced from the Ministry of Youth and Sports 2017-2018 budget,” he said.

The Gareth Baber coached side had to settle for silver after losing the final 14-0 to arch rivals New Zealand.
