QVS beats Lelean to snatch U17 title

Queen Victoria School came from behind to snatch the Powerade Super Deans Championship U17 title with a 9-8 win over Lelean Memorial School in the final at the ANZ Stadium in Suva today.

The boys from Matavatucou made a good start and led 6-0 at halftime after getting their points from a penalty and a drop goal.

Hardworking forward Josaia Taufa scored the first try of the match early in the second half as Lelean reduced the margin to 6-5.

Fly-half Rupeni Gera kicked a penalty midway in the second half to put Lelean up by 8-6.

QVS Captain and flanker Semi Tauyavuca scored the winner in the 60th minute with a penalty from out-wide.

Tauyavuca said when the team came today they had nothing else in mind but to give all their best and get the title which was their aim from the beginning of the season.

“We achieved what we’ve been aiming to get, and that is the under 17 title and I want to thank the Lord for giving us the strength and determination towards this win,” he said.

Tauyavuca also thanked the boys from LMS for the good competition they provided.

He dedicated the win to all QVS students, supporters, parents, teachers and old scholars who gathered in numbers today to rally their support for the team.
