213 attempted suicide cases each year

On average 213 cases of attempted suicide are reported annually and since 2016, 1,276 suicide cases have been recorded.

Responding to  Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma’s End of the Week Statement, Minister for Health, Dr Atonio Lalabalavu said Fiji cannot and must not ignore suicide.

Dr Lalabalavu said the highest number of suicide and attempted suicide cases were recorded in 2019 with 244 cases, and the Western Division recorded the most cases every year for six years.

The Ministry of Health, he said has placed suicide prevention high on its agenda and is committed to transforming its efforts to implement effective actions to prevent suicide.

He said Fiji has implemented several measures to address and prevent suicides, reflecting a comprehensive and community-based approach to mental health and suicide prevention.

“The Government is committed to tackling suicide through a multi-faceted approach. It simply means that more people should know about it, talk about it, and do something about it.” Dr Lalabalavu added.

The Ministry of Health said these organisations provide 24-hour toll-free counseling services and support to individuals experiencing mental health issues or suicidal thoughts.
