4 serious accidents in last 24 hours

Four serious accidents occurred around the country in the last 24 hours.

The first accident recorded in the Northern Division occurred in Labasa town yesterday afternoon.

A 60-year-old man whilst crossing near the Labasa market was allegedly bumped by a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old woman.

As a result of the accident, the victim sustained serious injuries and is currently admitted at the Labasa Hospital.

In another accident, a 13-year-old student was allegedly bumped by a vehicle whilst crossing the road at the Cargill Place junction in Nakasi.

It is alleged that he did not see the oncoming vehicle driven by a 36-year-old man, as there was a bus parked near the junction.

The victim was rushed to the Nakasi Health Centre and later transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he remains admitted in stable condition.

The third serious accident recorded yesterday involved a Police officer along Ratu Dovi Road.

A vehicle driven by a 62-year-old man had bumped a car driven by a 33-year-old woman, and as a result the 43-year-old Police officer’s motorcycle was hit from behind.

The officer sustained minor injuries.

And this morning, a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old man veered off the road in Koroqaqa, Baulevu.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana is urging drivers and pedestrians to be alert as a lapse of concentration can result in serious injury or worse, death.

SSP Divuana said accidents can be avoided; but a change of mindset is required in accepting the fact that we all equally share responsibility when it comes to road safety.
