Bad weather predicted for long weekend

The Fiji Meteorological Service says Fijians will need to be mindful of the possibility of an isolated 30 minutes or less of heavy rainfall, especially in the afternoon or evening in the Northern Division, eastern parts of Viti Levu and other islands, on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Occasional showers are expected over the Northern Division, the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups on New Year’s Day.

Fine weather is expected over the rest of the Fiji Group, apart from isolated showers in the afternoon or evening.

A southeast wind flow is expected over the Fiji group tomorrow and Sunday, and this will bring cloudy periods and some showers over the southern, interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu namely Serua, Namosi, Navua, Suva, Nausori, Naitasiri, Tailevu and eastern Ra.

This weather will also affect Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Cakaudrove, eastern Macuata and Southern Bua.

Isolated heavy falls can also be experienced, especially in the afternoon or evening, while fine weather can be expected over the rest of the Fiji Group with isolated afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms.

On New Year’s Day, a trough of low pressure is likely to bring occasional showers over the Northern Division, the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

Isolated heavy falls are highly likely in these areas.

Maximum temperatures are expected to be about 33 degrees Celsius around major centres over the country this New Year’s weekend.
