Drua aims to retain core squad

Chief executive Mark Evans anticipates majority of players in the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua squad to remain with the team for a number of years.

Evans highlighted that all top teams in the world hold a core squad of top club players who form the chassis of the team and commit to long term deals.

“Most of the best teams in the world have a core that stay with them for eight to ten years,” Evans said.

Evans said players will move on to pursue other offers and that is unavoidable especially when a relatively new club like the Drua has to compete with senior elite clubs in Europe and down south.

“A few of the players will move on, but in order to have a strong team that core will be important, and some players will remain with the club and be loyal to the club and will in the end build the club to another level.”
