False Fiji Womens 7s claim must be dealt with: Koya

Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya called for thorough investigations and the termination of the officer responsible at the Fiji Rugby Union after the report by the Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu was labelled ‘false’.

The report stems from media reports and pictures circulated on social media of our Fijiana Sevens team sleeping on airport benches outside the Sydney Airport, last December on transit to Dubai.

Koya said: “This has become a very sore topic which requires a thorough investigation, especially now because you are saying that the complaint put forward by the Speaker has turned out to be a lie.”

“I think it requires a thorough investigation as to what is going on in FRU and someone is responsible and needs to go home.”

In Parliament on Monday, the Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru said a report from Rugby House has been received and has been forwarded to the Office of the Prime Minister which confirmed that the allegation of the Fijiana Seven Players sleeping in the park benches outside Sydney Airport was ‘false’.

Saukuru said the Government together with the Ministry is deeply concerned about the recent reports regarding the situation faced by our Fiji Airways Fijiana Sevens Team, as they transited to Dubai.

He said the welfare and comfort of our athletes are of utmost importance to us, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience or discomfort caused to the team.

Also, Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu questioned whether the report he forwarded to the Office of the Prime Minister and the Fiji Rugby Union investigation on the matter was false.

Ratu Naiqama said it was the Fijiana coach who complained to him.

“When that issue came up, I raised it by way of a report simply on that basis. So, if we are going to continue with this pointing of fingers, that someone is lying, this is false, then heaven knows what else may come through.”

“The good thing about hearing it is, because now, mine is being labelled as ‘false’. I would like to implore upon you, Honourable Minister, please, have your fingers on the pulse,” Ratu Naiqama said.
