FELT to uphold minimum wage standards

The Framework on Engaging Local Tradesmen/Women (FELT) is set to uphold the minimum wage standards, heralding a new era of fair compensation and empowerment for local craftsmanship.

FELT is designed to offer local tradesmen/women meaningful opportunities for engagement, skill enhancement, and contribution to rural development and this initiative not only ensures remuneration but also fosters skill development and enhances rural livelihoods.

Permanent Secretary for Civil Service, Parmesh Chand said by adhering to minimum wage regulations, FELT ensures that these rural craftsmen/women receive fair compensation for their labor, thereby uplifting their economic status and contributing to the attractiveness of rural living.

He said Government has offices, residential quarters and stations in rural areas and outer islands which need minor repairs and maintenance on a regular basis.

“It is logistically difficult and expensive to undertake such works using enlisted Suppliers and Contractors on Government data base or for that matter in full compliance with Government Procurement Guidelines,” Chand said.

The FELT Framework not only addresses these challenges but also signifies a paradigm shift towards inclusive economic development, where local craftsmen and women are recognized, empowered, and fairly compensated for their contributions.

District Officers and Provincial Administrators are encouraged to collaborate with community leaders to improve the infrastructure of Government offices and stations in rural areas.
