Experience a part of Fiji not seen by many river rafting down the Navua river.

It's not every day you get to experience a part of Fiji not seen by many. Which is exactly what I recently did on a Rivers Fiji tour of the Upper Navua River.

Located in the "remarkable highlands of Viti Levu, the Upper Navua is one of the most unique rivers on earth. Slicing a deep chasm through the island's tropical interior, the river acts as a hidden pathway to a pristine tropical wilderness.

Shrouded in lush rain forest, fed by countless waterfalls and protected by challenging rapids, the headwaters of the Upper Navua have remained unexplored and unknown to all but the most intrepid adventurers - until now."

Getting to the river meant a choppy hour-long drive along rough gravel road deep into the mountains.

It really felt like we were leaving civilisation and all the conveniences of the modern world behind to experience nature at its best - pure and unspoilt.

With paddles in hand, a brief hike through dense forest brought us to the starting point.

Once on the river bank, our expert guides briefed us on the finer points of kayaking and rafting and what to do in case our vessel tipped over. Oh dear!

Fingers crossed, we set out on the river and before long we approached our first rapids.

Where as the calmer, still parts of the river required straightforward paddling, it was the rapids that provided the fun and excitement.

Kayaks and rafts did 360-degree spins, got caught on rocks and driftwood and in some cases even toppled over.
