Showcasing the beauty and grace of Melanesian countries.

It will be a powerful presentation of both contemporary and traditionally produced art - showcasing the beauty and grace of Melanesia.

Third Melanesian Arts & Cultural Festival to be held in Suva next month will be directed on the theme of Living Cultures, Living Traditions enacting the lifestyle of the Melanesian people.

The weeklong entertainment will also mark the celebrations for Fiji Day, which will include five countries from the Pacific region including Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia (Kanaks) along with Fiji.

The festivals objective is to preserve, protect and promote Indigenous Melanesian cultures and for these Melanesian countries to look to each other for support in maintaining and promoting their traditions and culture.

The first Melanesia Arts & Cultural Festival was held in 1998 in the Solomon Islands, and the second held in 2002 in Vanuatu, the festival is hosted every four years.

Fiji will host the festival from October 2- 11.

It will be spread along the Suva Foreshore utilizing Sukuna Park, Civic Centre, Civic carpark and the Foreshore Reclamation Park.

Guests will be treated to the sights of age old craftmanship, processes and techniques of making masi, carving, weaving, culinary skills and traditional medicine.

These artistic and cultural demonstrations will be held throughout the day in Sukuna Park, each day showcasing a different country. Sukuna Park will also host the daily cultural lunch time entertainment. During the whole week of the MACF, Suva Civic Centre will house an exhibition of exquisite Melanesian arts and craft.

The sale of these fine Melanesian arts and crafts will be from the Festival Village on the Foreshore Reclamation Park.

Both the Exhibition and the Festival Village will be open until late at night to coincide with the evening performances as the Festival village will have five bures, housing each respective country.

The other countries who have indicated their interest to be part of this are: Australia (Aborigines), Torres Strait Islands, West Papua (Irian Jaya) Thursday Islands and East Timor.
