Back from India.....Harish Kumar, Ahilya and Slyvester Joseph pose during the International Students Day celebration at the Indian High Com.

The Indian Cultural Centre, an arm of the Indian High Commission held a reception to mark two important celebrations in Suva last night.

The centre celebrated the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Muhiyuddin Ahmed or Maulana Azad as he is commonly known and the International Students Day, two important events on the Indian calendar.

Maulana Azad (11 November 1888 22 February 1958) was a Muslim scholar and a senior political leader of the movement. He was one of the most prominent Muslim leaders to support Hindu-Muslim unity, opposing the partition of India on communal lines. Following India's independence, he became the first Minister of Education in the Indian government.

Interim chairman of the Fiji National University Dr Ganesh Chand, who was the chief guest at the function, spoke on the theme Friendship through Culture

Chand an economist by profession said it was very important to know one anothers culture in todays modern and dynamic world.

Culture is something we need to preserve and in order to preserve our cultures we need to inform and educate others about it and at the same time learn and appreciate theirs.

India proudly is one of the most culturally enriched countries in the world and it is so nice to see people of all races present here tonight to celebrate two important occasions.

Guest of honor and former Judge Nazhat Shameem shared some light on Maula Azads life experiences and his achievements.

Four Fiji nationals: Harish Kumar, Dipal Maneklal, Ahalya Gounder and Sylvester Joseph, who recently visited India under the 12th Know India Program 2009, also shared their experiences with the 100 plus guests that gathered at the function.

Live performances by Indian Cultural Centre musicians and the Shobna Chanel dance group kept the guests entertained with a delicious variety of Indian sweets and food on offer also.
