Get your facts right, Sharma tells Biman

Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma has lashed out at the Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad and called on him to get his facts right.

In a statement, Sharma clarified that he had not spoken to any Australian media, other than the Australian News Agency having taken a statement from his social media post without his knowledge or approval.

“After I heard about the horrific news of a 58-year-old lady that was brutally bashed in her house in Moto, Ba -someone on social media shared with me a link about the news of a Victorian man’s stabbing incident covered by 9News on 10th May 2024,” Sharma said.

Responding to Prof Prasad’s statement in the media, Sharma said he had put a post on Facebook about how the high cost of living is related to high crime rates.

Sharma said when high VAT is imposed on people, we tend to afford less and our day-to-day struggles increase – Businesses’ cost of operation has gone up and this impacts the number of employees and the number of hours reduced for employees also.

He said the ripple effects are increased unemployment, poverty, and crime.

“When investigations surfaced for the stabbing case of the Australian tourist, on 13th May 2024-Fiji Village reported that the Australian man had a self-inflicted wound after an argument with his wife.”

“According to a post by Fiji Police Force on the 16th of February, 2024, a 10 percent increase in overall crime was recorded for January, 2024. And crime against women was recorded as a 31 percent increase.”

“Let’s not forget the horrific bashing incident faced by the 58-year-old lady in Moto, Ba. And for such cases not to occur, it’s important to caution the public and work together to combat this,” he said.

However, the Deputy Prime Minister has called on the Fiji Police Force to investigate the Member of Parliament for his comments.
