Govt investigates excessive spending

Investigations have begun into what appears to be excessive spending by Fiji’s Department of Information.

Speaking to the nation yesterday, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said this is through payments to the public affairs company Qorvis, the local communication company VATIS, the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation and local newspaper, Fiji Sun.

He said that in fact, there are many looming issues to address and that there has been a sweeping overview of electoral deficiencies.

Rabuka also said that the Government believes there is also cause to investigate Capital Gains Tax exemptions to apparently benefit a select few.

“The files are with the Ministry of Finance, and we will keep the public informed of the progress of this investigation.”

Questions have been sent to the organisations named by the Prime Minister.
