ill-disciplined Fiji bundled out of LA 7s

Spain created World 7s Series history in Los Angeles today after beating Fiji 21-19 in the Cup quarterfinals and qualifying for the semifinals for the first time ever.

A red card to Terio Tamani midway in the second half and a yellow to Pilipo Bukayaro left Fiji with only five players on the field and gave the Spanish the chance to hit back and snatch the famous victory over the two-time Olympic champions.

Fiji made a perfect start to the match and scored two quick tries through Ponipate Loganimasi and Bukayaro from restarts and Captain Napolioni Bolaca converted for a 14-0 lead.

Ropate Rere used his bursting speed to score the third try as Fiji led 19-0 at the break.

A penalty try in the 11th minute saw Spain hit back into the match and Captain Pol Pla took full advantage of having two extra players on the field to score in the 12th and 13th minute with Juan Ramos slotting in the winning conversion.

Upsets were also registered in other quarters as leaders Argentina were beaten 24-14 by Ireland while France beat host USA 14-0 and Great Britain outclassed Australia 26-19.
