With official results of the 2022 General Election now out, and no party getting the absolute majority of 51 per cent of votes, Fiji’s new Government will be formed through a coalition.
In terms of securing seats in Parliament, a party needed 28 seats to form Government.
FijiFirst has managed to secure 26 seats, People’s Alliance has won 21 seats, National Federation Party has got 5 seats and Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has grabbed 3 seats.
People’s Alliance and NFP already have a coalition and combined they have 26 seats, which is the same number of seats the FijiFirst Party has.
Based on this scenario, SODELPA becomes the game changer and a merger with either the PA-NFP coalition or FijiFirst would see the formation of the new Government with absolute majority.
SODELPA officials have confirmed meeting representatives of the three parties and say they will work with the party which has similar values, interests and policies.
No confirmation has come through yet on which party or parties the Viliame Gavoka led movement will team up with.
