Finland, which brought the world the oddities of wife-carrying and mobile phone throwing, burned off all comers to take gold in the World Sauna Championships here.

Finns turn up heat in sauna championshipsHome favourite Timo Kaukonen won the men's event late Saturday by withstanding a sweltering 110 degrees Celsius (230 degrees Fahrenheit) for 3 minutes 46 seconds. He beat compatriot Ilkka Poeyhiae by two seconds.

Russia's Tatyana Arkhipenko took the women's event, braving the heat for three minutes and nine seconds.

The world championships in sauna sitting have been held in Heinola, 138 kilometres (86 miles) north of Helsinki since 1999.

This year's event drew 150 competitors from more than 20 countries including Belgium, Belarus and Sweden.
