Seven per cent of Fiji which equates to around 60,000 citizens lives in squatter settlements, revealed director for Housing and Squatter Settlement Kolinio Bola.

Bola told Fijilive there are more than 200 squatter settlements in Fiji with heavy concentration between the Suva and Nausori corridor.

“Squatter settlements are a big problem for Fiji,” he said.

Bola said they will work closely with the municipal councils to reduce some of the squatter settlements.

“We are working in partnership with the government and non- governmental organisations in improving the well-being of people living in squatter communities,” he said.

Bola said 15 squatter upgrade projects will be done within the next three years.

He said apart from the joint actions from all the municipalities, government also has its own squatter upgrading programmes.

Bola said $1.5million have been given by government for this year’s squatter upgrading.

“More than 29 leases have been issued so far,” he said.

There are also plans to upgrade squatter settlements in the western and northern division.
