'Ban ethnic schools, teach vernacular'

'Ban ethnic schools, teach vernacular' Fiji's Muslim League says ethnic schools need to be banned and the vernacular language taught to all students to help build racial tolerance.

Fiji Muslim League general secretary Taabish Akbar says Muslim schools are all multi-racial schools.

Akbar’s comment comes after the Citizens’ Constitutional Forum called for the criminalisation of racial discrimination and religious vilification, and to include faith and culture in schools to help build racial tolerance.

Akbar said there should not be any school that enrols i-Taukei or Indo-Fijians only.

“Vernacular language should be compulsory in schools so i-Taukei students learn Chinese or Hindi or vice versa,” he said.

He said faith and culture is already in the school system but it needs to be strengthened or made compulsory.
