$5mln to complete Lagilagi housing An extra $5million will be needed by the People’s Community Network of Fiji (PCN) to complete the Lagilagi Jittu housing project.

PCN consultant Father Kevin Barr said delay to the construction of new flats was due to lack of funding and a $230,000 demand from the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) for upfront payment for electricity installation.

“We have been very disappointed that there has been very little response to our requests for financial assistance from various banks and business companies in Fiji over past months,” Father Barr told FijiLive.

“We trust that we will continue to receive assistance from government to complete the project. Hopefully also some other funding agencies may assist.”
The project when completed will provide housing for 152 families in two and three bedroom units.

“This includes five houses for the elderly and disabled with their carers, there will be a community hall, kindergarten and small playing field as well as a taxi stand and small market,” Father Barr said.

“Fortech Construction has so far almost completed about 35 units (in Phase 1.1 and 1.2) and has done a very nice job.”

Father Barr further said completed project will then generate funding for the construction of new housing projects.

The housing project costs $8.7m with $1.4m given by government, $1.3m from an overseas Donor agency MISEREOR, Germany and savings from families living near and in squatter settlement in the area.
