Retailers welcome port partnership

Retailers welcome port partnership The Fiji Retailers Association has welcomed government’s decision to partner with Sri Lankan company Aitken Spence Maritime Limited and bring about efficiency at the country’s major ports in Suva and Lautoka.

FRA president Himmat Lodhia said the Sri Lankan company seems to have extensive expertise and this is what Fiji needs to boost its port activities.

“Over the past few years, we have seen increasing costs at the ports for import and exports. A lot of previously unheard charges have been introduced. All these charges and fees have contributed to an increase in costs of doing business,” he said.

“The increases inevitably hit the consumer pockets and the people end up paying more for the goods. We sincerely hope that with this new team, the costs will go down and some of the fees will disappear forever.”

“Whilst we are introducing the new team, we hope the services will be streamlined, but lets hope there is no increase in unemployment,” he added.

FRA is also urging government to look at outsourcing some of the other unproductive government funded organisations.
