More than $50k recovered in wages More than $50,000 of one month’s wages was recovered by Fiji’s Ministry of Labour for 62 workers in a prominent resort in Sigatoka.

This was after the Labour ministry received a complaint from the resort workers and advised them not to take any illegal actions against the employers including illegal strike as the Ministry will look into the matter.

The total wages recovered was $51,821.76 and Minister for Labour Jone Usamate said an open discussion to obtain the complaints was held between the Ministry’s investigation team and they later met with the resort owner to discuss the issue of non-payment of wages.

“My labour team explained the provisions of the Employment Relations Promulgation 2007(ERP) and the Hotel & Catering Wages Regulations Order (WRO) and the time frame given for the payment of unpaid wages by the employer,” he said.

He said the team made a firm commitment to resolve the case and through discussions, the employer fully understood the provisions of the law and the consequence of failing to comply.

He also said they are currently liaising with the Nadroga and Navosa provincial council office, the Fiji National Provident Fund, Department of Immigration, and Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority to jointly visit the resort to conduct awareness and training for both the workers and management.
