Fiji’s former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says he deeply regrets his role in leading the 1987 military coup.
Rabuka made the comments at the University of Otago’s latest annual Foreign Policy School yesterday.
According to the Otago Daily Times, Rabuka mentioned that despite his role during the coup he supported the later collaborative efforts including a constitutional review commission which was chaired by the late Sir Paul Reeves which helped produced the 1997 Constitution.
He said after meeting some people he had deposed in 1987 and reflected on the situation he now felt obliged to apologise to everyone who was affected.
