Taskforce to monitor retailers Retailers can expect spot checks with the formation of a taskforce set up to monitor whether they are passing down benefits of duty concessions to consumers or not.

The Ministry of Finance has set up two committees of senior officer to carry out the monitoring exercise.

Finance Ministry PS, Filimoni Waqabaca said, the exercise is largely aimed at ensuring that cheaper prices on items that have been granted duty concessions.

Businesses that fail to pass on the concession to consumers could have their concession withdrawn.

The taskforce comprises of senior officers from the Finance Ministry, Ministry of Industry and Trade and Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority.

Some of these items  include food supplements (used by pregnant mothers, senior citizens and chronically ill patients), baby feeding bottles reduced (reduction in import of cheap baby bottles), imported spare parts for maritime vessels, imported agricultural items, and concrete products and iron panels.
