Accept, implement recommendations: Draunidalo National Federation Party president Roko Tupou Draunidalo says the Fijian Government should not hesitate in accepting recommendations of the Multinational Observer Group (MOG) if it truly believes in common and equal citizenry and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.

Released this week, the 53-page report reaffirms the MOG's preliminary statement in which it deemed the 2014 election credible.

The report also outlines recommendations, calling for a review of restrictions on media, the need for an independent body to oversee media, recommends the review of the political parties decree including requirements and participation of trade unionist and the review of electoral laws.

While Minister for Elections and Minister for Justice Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has yet to comment on the matter, the Fijian Elections Office has acknowledged recommendations made and said they would "carefully review the report and its recommendations as it prepares for the 2018 election."

But, Ms Draunidalo insists the onus is on the Fijian Government to inform the people whether or not it will accept and implement recommendations.

The recommendations contained in the report Ms Draunidalo says are credible and highlights the difficulties and frustrations faced by the political parties, candidates, the media and non-governmental organisation's (NGO’s).

"If Government truly believes in common and equal citizenry and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, it should have no hesitation in accepting the recommendations of the MOG, which observed the elections in strict compliance with Government’s Terms of Reference," Ms Draunidalo said.

The recommendations by the MOG, Ms Draunidalo says has vindicated the position taken by the NFP when it last week, called for the release of the report, emphasized the importance of the report and its recommendations to be incorporated in any strategic planning undertaken by the Elections Office as part of preparations for the next general elections scheduled in 2018.

"This is after Government brings before Parliament, the Media Industry Development Decree, Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Decree and the Electoral Decree, to make the necessary changes as recommended by the MOG to make the next elections credible."
