Baby named after Fijian Medics

Baby named after Fijian Medics A new born baby boy in Vanuatu’s Lenakel Hospital has been named after Fijian health personnel stationed there for relief assistance.

A Ministry of National Disaster Management statement from the Fiji Response Team in Vanuatu said Samuel Kini Lovobalavu from Lenaken Village in Tanna Island was born on Palm Sunday and received his name from three different Fijian health officials - Health Inspector Samuela Bolalailai, RFMF Medic Sgt. Kini Nacagilevu, and Chief Health Inspector Kanito Lovobalavu.

“We decided to name the baby after the two retirees, Samuela and Sgt. Kini,” Mr. Lovobalavu said.

“But because both their names cannot be surnames, I had to call back home and ask my family if I could use my surname for this child.”

Mr. Lovobalavu said that the two Fijian midwives who successfully carried out the delivery have done very well and deserve to be thanked.

“There were seeming complications but the midwives did a good job and the baby was born well and healthy,” he said. The people here are really impressed with the Fiji team because of the standards of work that have been brought in.”

The health officials are assisting Vanuatu’s Ministry of Health with Cyclone Pam relief efforts.

They are expected to return to Fiji later this month.
