Lack of beds in prison: Report There are insufficient beds in prisons around the country due to the increase in prisoners over the years.

According to a recent correctional administrator's report, prisons in the country has a capacity of 1916 but houses a population of 2643.

The 2020 US Country Reports on Human Rights Practices said the national prison system remains overcrowded and, with inadequate essential services.

 “There were insufficient beds, inadequate sanitation, and a shortage of other necessities The national prison systems are overcrowded with deteriorating infrastructure.

“Some prison facilities reportedly were unsuitable for aged inmates or those with physical and mental disabilities.

“Authorities generally separated pretrial detainees and convicted prisoners at shared facilities, although in some cases authorities held them together,” the report said.

The report said the newly completed Lautoka Correction caters to the elderly, disabled, and bedridden prisoners, which is a step towards improvement.

Questions have been sent to the Fiji Correction Services.
