Prisoner complaints not taken seriously: Report A human rights report claims authorities do not take seriously allegations of abuse of prisoners.

The 2020 US Country Reports on Human Rights Practices said authorities do not investigate or document credible allegations of inhumane conditions in a publicly accessible manner.

There still hasn’t been any update from the authorities of the case of the two inmates who claimed corrections officers assaulted them during a strip search and took pictures of them.

Also, the trial for the four prison officers charged for killing a remand prisoner and assaulting two others has still not opened yet.

The prison officers are on bail after pleading guilty for killing a remand prisoner and assaulting two others.

“Prisoners may submit complaints to the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission or judicial authorities, which investigated several complaints during the year.

“Although the law prohibits authorities from reviewing, prisoner letters to the judiciary and the commission, authorities routinely reviewed such letters and, in most cases, seized them.

“Authorities did not investigate or document credible allegations of inhumane conditions in a publicly accessible manner,” the report said.

The report said detainees have the right to observe their religion but cannot change their religion or beliefs without consulting a prison officer.

It said non-governmental organisations visit official detention facilities to interview detainees to question them about the challenges they are going through.
