Operations at Lautoka Hospital affected

Operations at Lautoka Hospital affected Operations at Lautoka Hospital have been affected as medical staff are undergoing quarantine after two doctors tested positive for coronavirus on Monday.

Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong in a press conference today stated that many of the people who the two doctors came into contact with are their colleagues.

He said this has seriously affected their staffing capacity, particularly for medical and surgical services.

“Following confirmation that two doctors tested positive for coronavirus, we launched an immediate and intensive contact tracing exercise,” he said.

“These two doctors worked closely together, so we’re quite sure one passed the virus to the other but individually, they both came into contact with many others.

“So far, 98 have been identified. Many of these contacts unsurprisingly are their colleagues who work at Lautoka Hospital, including doctors and nurses."

“As per protocol, these Fijians must be entered into two weeks of quarantine."

He said they have re-deployed staff from other facilities to cover these gaps, but needless to say, it will be a very demanding two weeks of shifts for the staff at the Lautoka Hospital.
