People in the West treated unfairly: Gavoka Social Democratic Liberal Party Leader Viliame Gavoka believes the people in the Western Division have been unfairly treated by government in terms of coronavirus assistance during lockdown.

Gavoka said while they appreciate the government’s initiative to assist people within the Suva – Nausori containment zones, those in the West feel snubbed.

He said it should not have been the case in the first place as the Western Division is one of the worst-hit regions since February last year.

He said for the past few weeks numerous non-governmental organisations have forward to try to provide assistance to those that have been affected the worse by this pandemic.

“For the past few days, I have received calls from the people in the West expressing their disappointment over how they have been unfairly treated,” he said.

Gavoka said the government should come forward to explain how an additional general budget support package of $55 million by the Australian government be spend.

“We would be grateful if the people are informed as to how government plans to utilise this grant and how it will best support them,” he said.

“We call on the government to work in partnership with non-governmental organisations as to how best they are able to provide necessary assistance to those that need it.

“Even better allocate a fraction of the budgetary support for our non-governmental organisations that are actively carrying out their work to help those impacted,” he said.

He said they always stand ready to work with governmental and deliberate on ways of how to help the people.
