8 villagers taken by Police: Kuridrani Eight villagers from Namatakula, in Nadroga, were taken in for questioning by officers from Korolevu Police Station for protesting for the use of resorts near them as quarantine facilities.

Member of opposition Inosi Kuridrani said a police truck took the eight village members from Namatakula at 7pm yesterday for the protest.

Kuridrani said the statement made by police that no one was taken in for questioning is a lie as he personally witnessed it.

Speaking to Fiji Live Kuridrani has confirmed that no charges were laid after being questioned.

“The sentiment made by police that no village members were taken in for questioning is a lie. A police truck took eight village members in for questioning at 7pm,” he said.

“I witnessed firsthand when police officers came into the village to take in the eight people for questioning for protesting. The truck had no tarpaulin over it.

“Most of the people that were taken in for questioning were elders of the village. They were taken like animals as the truck had no tarpaulin over and proper seats."

“The villagers were not breaking any law protesting for resorts near them not be used as quarantine facilities.

The protest was not carried out in public spaces,” he said.

He said the action by authorities is nothing short of fear-mongering and intimidation tactics.
