Anticipating more cases from Barracks The Ministry of Health is anticipating more cases from the cluster at the Police Barracks in Nasinu after five officers were tested positive for coronavirus.

Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong said the mobile screening teams are isolating positive patients to prevent the further spread of the virus.

Dr Fong in a statement said their mitigation strategy is targeted at isolating cases and treating patients who develop severe cases of the disease.

“Seven patients have recovered, which means there are now 656 active cases in isolation. There have been 849 cases during the current outbreak that started in April 2021,” he said.

There were 39 new cases announced today, 32 of the cases are connected to existing clusters and seven are under investigation, there have been 256 recoveries.

“Four people have died due to coronavirus. A total of three coronavirus positive patients have died from pre-existing non-coronavirus related illnesses,” he said.

Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said all divisional commissioners have been directed to ensure that officers are staying within their bubbles to prevent any further spread.

Tudravu said he is not surprised that police officers have been tested positive for coronavirus as they are at risk of contracting the virus.

He said now that cases have emerged, they need to be vigilant and every officer must be disciplined.
