Coronavirus claims another life A 68-year-old man has died, few weeks after he was tested positive for coronavirus.

Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong in a statement said the 68-year-old man passed away at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Dr Fong said he tested positive during his admission and his doctors have confirmed his death as a coronavirus death.

He said there have now been nine deaths due to coronavirus, seven of these deaths are during the outbreak that started in April this year.

“There are now 1631 active cases in isolation after 86 people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours,” he said.

“There have been 2200 cases during the outbreak that started in April 2021. We have recorded a total of 2270 cases in Fiji since the first case was reported in March 2020.

“A total of 618 people had recovered from the disease since the first case was reported last year. There have now been nine deaths due to coronavirus.

“Seven of these deaths are during the outbreak that started in April this year. Two deaths are under investigation to determine if they were caused by coronavirus.”

He said eight coronavirus-positive patients have died from pre-existing non-coronavirus-related illnesses.
