Delta variant has not mutated: Fong The coronavirus has not mutated despite the severe increase of cases in Fiji over the last few days.

This was highlighted by the Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong after he was asked whether the virus has mutated from the increase in cases in the country.

Dr Fong in an exclusive interview with FijiLive said the delta variant is still rife in Fiji at the moment

“With the high numbers of new daily cases, the ministry has witnessed an increase in severe cases of coronavirus,” he said.

“The ministry has also seen an increase in deaths as the number of new daily cases surge. There have now been more than 170 deaths since the outbreak started in April this year.

“We also have recorded 75 coronavirus positive patients who died from the serious medical conditions that they had before they contracted the virus.

“There have been 792 new recoveries reported since the last update, which means that there are now 16,061 active cases.

“There have been 21,759 cases during the outbreak that started in April 2021. We have recorded a total of 21, 829 cases in Fiji since the first case was reported in March 2020,” he said.

He said a total of 5521 individuals have recovered from coronavirus since the country recorded its first case of the virus last year.
