Ease of access to vaccine in the region is vital: Koya Pacific leaders have called on the World Trade Organisation to waive intellectual property rights protection for technologies needed to prevent, contain and treat coronavirus in the region.

Minister for Trade Faiyaz Koya said the waiver would ensure regional countries have access to vaccines including pursuing opportunities for complementary alternative medicines.

Koya said leaders have pledged for 80 per cent of the eligible population across the Pacific to be vaccinated by the first quarter of 2022.

“All forum leaders have considered endorsing a coronavirus vaccination target of at least 80 percent of the eligible population across the Pacific by the first quarter of 2022,” he said.

“The regional countries have confirmed their support for the World Trade Organisation to waive intellectual property rights protection to help treat coronavirus.

“This is a valuable opportunity for country leaders to overcome the supply-side limitations of the vaccines and ensure access to affordable vaccines and medical supplies,” he said.

He, in a press conference, said the Pacific’s path to recovery hinges on mass vaccination and they know this because developed economies with greater vaccine rates are already travelling.
