Latest Update: 5 deaths, 3 at home Five people are the latest fatalities of the deadly coronavirus, three succumbed to the disease at home.

Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong said there are now 177 coronavirus deaths in Fiji, with 175 of these deaths during the outbreak that started in April this year.

Dr Fong in a statement said the ministry has witnessed an increase of severe cases of coronavirus and deaths in the country in the last few days.

“A 73-year-old woman of Namoli Village in Lautoka died due to being presented late to the emergency department at Lautoka for severe respiratory distress,” he said.

“The woman’s condition worsened at the hospital and she died on the same day, Monday. She was not vaccinated for coronavirus.

“Two women died of coronavirus on Tuesday at the central division. They are a 96-year-old woman of Nadera and a 67-year-old woman of Suva. They were not vaccinated.

“A 57-year-old woman of Nasinu died due to she was presented late to a health facility after having severe respiratory distress.

“Her condition worsened at the health facility and she died yesterday for coronavirus. She was not vaccinated for the virus.

“A 57-year-old man of Nasinu died of coronavirus at home. According to an investigation by the health ministry reveals he was not vaccinated for coronavirus,” he said.

He said there have been 165 new recoveries reported since the last update, which means that there are now 16,563 active cases.
