Info on COVID-19 is not constant: Dr Wilson Fiji Institute of Pacific Health Research Director Dr Donald Wilson says information on coronavirus is not constant as it is new and evolving.

Dr Wilson in a virtual discussion said the infection rate is growing extensively with its science evolving as scientists continue further research on the virus and its vaccine.

He said the organisation had been uncomfortable with coronavirus advisories because of their inconsistency.

“It is a known fact that the Alpha variant began in China which then moved to Brazil and then to India from where the Delta variant emerged,” he said.

“The AstraZeneca, which is available in Fiji, provides coverage of 92 per cent protection against hospitalisation after both doses."

“Even if you do get two jabs of the vaccine, you can still get the infected but you won’t have the severe disease or hospitalisation and the worry is hospitalisation for severe disease or death."

“We have already been reporting an increase in the numbers of deaths and also severe infection for which people are hospitalised,” he said.

He said there is value for vaccination as it protects against the virus.
