No remorse from government: NFP

No remorse from government: NFP The National Federation Party leader Biman Prasad claims the government is not showing remorse to the people as more dying from the coronavirus pandemic.

Prasad said the announcement of the $106 million loan for Fiji Airports comes at a time when the country is fighting a losing battle against the virus.

He said last week the Minister of Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had announced that it would cost the government $1 billion to have a lockdown of Viti Levu.

He said yet the government is negotiating with their Australian counterparts a loan for the development of the Nadi airport based on assumptions of economic projections

“In the last five days, Fiji has recorded 5000 coronavirus positive cases and 40 deaths. Other deaths of people who contracted the virus are being investigated,” he said.

“But this government is not even fluttering an eyelid and sows no compassion and empathy. people are struggling to put food on the table.

“All they will get is $30 a week for the next six months amounting to $720. The perception was that Government was only interested in generating economic activity.

“This is clearly the priority of this Government. Investing in infrastructure is a good policy when there is a demand to grow and improve it in sound economic conditions.

“But to do it at a time when every ounce of time, energy and resources should be devoted towards eliminating a virus that has destroyed lives and strangulated the economy is politically immoral.

“What use is developing the airport when the virus shows no signs of abating and has not even peaked, even according to the Prime Minister. Government has placed all its hopes on vaccination,” he said.

He said the escalation of the crisis will only delay any chance of relaxation of borders, rendering meaningless the development of the airport.
