People misinterpreting the Bible: Vunisuwai The President of the Methodist Church in Fiji Reverend Ili Vunisuwai says the coronavirus pandemic had been exacerbated by misinterpretation of the Bible.

Reverend Vunisuwai said in light of the socio-economic issues arising from the COVID-19 crisis, getting vaccinated was the only way forward for Fiji.

He said the country was “going through a tough time economically, people are in isolation and homes and families are facing problems”.

"We are trying our best to encourage vaccination but this has been made difficult by some shallow interpretations of the scriptures,'' he said.

“Before we say something theologically, we must know that the biblical passages have their own context and we take that and try to apply it directly.

''Our approach as a church is that this is a social responsibility for all Christians and that vaccination is a safe option to protect the people.''

“I’m sure they would have done their homework before starting to vaccinate people. God calls individuals to the profession and so they need our trust to be able to do their job effectively,” he said.

He said while vaccination remained a sensitive topic for some, he called on all Fijians to put their trust in the local and international medical professionals.
