Agents will be allowed at polling venues Political parties will now be legally allowed to have agents present in polling stations, packing areas and postal vote verification areas in the 2022 General Election.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said this was made possible after an amendment being made to the electoral laws.

Saneem in webinar with political parties said this was not allowed previously in the last two general elections as the law did not approve it.

“We had asked for the amendment in the law so that it can be possible for your party agents to be present in all these locations. Simply it's a designated area,” he said.

“When you come to this designated area, you will be required to comply with the standard rules for calling agents and not interfere in the process.

“One of the things that we urge you to do is talk to your agents not to argue with the officials conducting the process.

“One example was Ben Padarath in the last election, he ended up arguing with the police officers as well as the person who was running the ballot paper production.

“We had to ask Padarath to vacate the area because it was an unruly behavior under any circumstances,” he said.

He said if an agent disagreement, the procedure is for the political parties are to write to the Supervisor of Elections immediately with their concerns.
