Govt has failed to reduce poverty: Narube

Govt has failed to reduce poverty: Narube Unity Fiji Party Leader Savenaca Narube says the Government has failed badly in reducing poverty because of its poor Budget priorities and unfair tax policies.

Narube said the Government has also failed badly because it has ignored its resource based sectors in the last fifteen years.

He in a statement said the household income and expenditure survey period did not cover the second wave of the virus.

“It is shocking that 30 per cent of our people live in absolute poverty according to the latest household income and expenditure survey,” he said.

“Reducing the curse of poverty is the ultimate measure of the success of any Government. The measurement of poverty in this household income and expenditure survey is much broader.

“The household income and expenditure survey period did not cover the second wave of the virus. The level of poverty is therefore much worse.

“The household income and expenditure survey estimate that with a 20 percent increase in the poverty line, nearly 50 percent of the population will be living in absolute poverty,” he said.

He said according to the report 41 per cent of the rural dwellers live in poverty, more than doubled those in urban areas.

“Nearly 40 per cent of the indigenous people live in poverty. I believe this is the highest in our recorded history,” he said.

“The indigenous population has been suffering silently from poverty for many decades. Government after Government have done very little to reduce this poverty.

“The resources of the indigenous people have been politicized at the great expense to their livelihoods. By ignoring the resource based industries, they made poverty worse.

“Immediate steps must be taken to reduce poverty at all levels including those of the indigenous people,” he said.

He said many master plans for the development of our natural resources have failed miserably and instead of prospering the resource owners, these development models have pushed them deeper into poverty.
