Over 22,940 drivers booked for speeding Over 22,940 drivers were booked for speeding in the last eight months.  

Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho in a statement said seven of the 13 fatal accidents this year were caused by speeding.

Qiliho said other bookings include failure to wear a seat belt which accounted for 1,787 bookings and careless driving accounted for 1,432 bookings.

“A total of 259 drivers were charged for drunk and drive. Speeding kills and is a globally known fact,” he said.

“Thirteen fatal accidents have been recorded so far this year, of which seven were as a result of speeding. This is why we continue to ask road users to be careful and vigilant at all times.

“We understand that many have made plans to travel this week once borders open up, and we reiterate the need to be safe.

“We plead with all road users to be vigilant and to plan your travel ahead of time to avoid rushing and speeding,” he said.

He said the public need to remember that coronavirus safe measures will still remain in place even if the borders open this weekend.
