Seniors to resume classes before year end Senior secondary schools students will have face to face classes as soon as the Education Ministry puts COVID-19 safety protocols in place.

Minister for Education Premila Kumar said the Ministry intends to resume face to face classes for the Year 12 and 13 students and  students above the age of 18 will need to get vaccinated.

She said the latest data shows that 26 per cent of students are fully vaccinated.

“It is reassuring that we can now look forward to gradually reopening the schools particularly for the Years 12 and 13 later this year,” she said.

“The protocols also keep changing based on scientific research. While we must learn from others, we must also find our own solutions suited to our local situation.

“The new normal will include preparing schools that are poorly ventilated, training teachers on the coronavirus safe protocols to operate safely and educating students on the disease.

“We working on a number of logistics that must be put in place before students can be back in the classrooms,” she said.

She said of the 9,115 Year 13 students, 8,349 students are over 18 years of age and the remaining 766 students are 17 years old.
