State sacks Bureau of Statistics boss Fiji's Bureau of Statistics chief executive Kemueli Naiqama has been sacked after he authorised the release of the breakdown of ethnic and religion in the 2019-2020 Household Income and Expenditure Survey.

The government in a statement said Gounder has terminated his contract for failure to comply with section five of the Statistics Act 1961.

Naiqama was escorted out of his office today after being advised that his contract was terminated by the acting Permanent Secretary for Economy Shiri Gounder.

A statement issued by the government said: “Naiqama endorsed the publication of unverifiable information in the Housing Income and Expenditure Survey 2019-2020 relating to ethnicity and religion.”

“The data that was revealed to be extrapolated from erroneous sources and which exceeded the established scope of the survey’s data collection.

“The Fiji Bureau of Statistics is charged with the collection of statistics relating to any of the matters set out in Schedule 1 of the Statistics Act 1961.

“By exceeding the scope of data collection and ignoring fact-based methodology, Mr Naiqama breached the terms of his contract with the ministry.” the statement said.

The government said under his employment contract, he will be paid all salary and accrued entitlements for the period up to 15 September 2021.
