Systems will be challenged in border opening : Dr Gould World Bank lead economist Dr David Gould says the greatest challenge Fiji will face if it opens its border in November is how the health system would be able to respond.

Dr Gould said even though the nation would be fully vaccinated, there will still be some coronavirus because vaccines are not a cure for the virus.

He said the question the government will need to address is - does the health systems adequately exist to help manage whatever number of cases eventually.

“I think there's certainly a big desire from the World Bank to help countries in the region, accelerate and opening up as we can through the deployment of vaccines,” he said.

“The percentage of the eligible population that do get the vaccines will determine how quickly opening up can take place.

“One of the challenges that countries will face is, you know, do their health systems adequately reflect the needs that will arise once you do open up.

“Even if you get 100 percent people vaccinated, there will still be some coronavirus because vaccines are not a cure for the virus.

“The question that I think governments have to ask is do the health systems adequately exist to help manage whatever number of cases that there will be eventually,” he said.

He said there was a need for authorities to ensure that people travelling into Fiji have received two doses of the coronavirus vaccines.
